Canton—Local law firms are teaming up in a big way to help support restaurants and the area’s homeless population. Attorneys from Baker, Dublikar, Beck, Wiley & Mathews; Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs; Milligan Pusateri; Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty; Pelini, Campbell & Williams; and Tzangas Plakas Mannos committed to delivering meals six days a week through the end of May to the residents at the YWCA Canton’s Emergency Shelter.
“We are all grateful to have the means to be able to support our community. When we sat down to brainstorm how we could help, this idea seemed to be a way to aid multiple populations in our area,” said Greg Beck of Baker, Dublikar, Beck, Wiley & Mathews Law Firm who is spearheading the initiative,
Ohio’s Stay at Home Order caused many area restaurants to close. Those that remain open are offering carry-out and delivery, but continue to see their revenue dwindle.
“It’s a true blessing to be a part of such a wonderful outreach and we hope everyone enjoys the fresh, flavorful food,” said Ashley Roberts owner of BAM Healthy Cuisine.
The YWCA Canton has been preparing for a possible outbreak of COVID-19 among the homeless population since the end of February.
“We are following guidelines set forth by the CDC and local health officials and have asked our residents to Shelter in Place until further notice,” said Cathy Mick-Jennings, CEO of the YWCA, “This puts a huge burden not only on our residents, but also our staff who have been tasked with finding donations for food, personal supplies, and cleaning products while maintaining social distancing orders.”
The meal donation is no small task, as there are currently over forty residents at the shelter, four of whom are children.
“The idea has really taken off. More firms, as well as all our local judges, are coming forward offering their assistance. We have enough support now to start the same project at the Domestic Violence Project, Inc,” said Beck.
“On behalf of the local judiciary I would like to commend local members of the bar for mobilizing and contributing to help the community in these uncertain times. We are happy to support their efforts both in assisting local businesses and providing needed relief to those most affected by the current health crisis. Kindness and compassion are qualities we should all strive to embody in innovative ways while we navigate our new normal,” said Judge Taryn Heath who is coordinating support.
